18. Oil Mixing Principles.

It is prohibited to mix different types of oils, especially without the knowledge of the exact oil chemical composition and physical properties in scope of oil sources and applied improvers. Accidental oils mixing without prior miscibility analysis may drastically deteriorate physiochemical properties of the mixture, and even destroy the oil irrevocably.

If it is necessary to mix oils, respect the following rules:

  • products intended for mixing must be known and fully tested, the final product should also be tested, including ageing tests, to review if the properties obtained correspond to those predicted,
  • it is allowed to mix kerosene products of the same type with a different ageing degree, if laboratory mixing tests have yielded positive results,
  • a rule should prevail that the added oil's properties are better or equivalent to the properties of the oil working in the system,
  • it is forbidden to mix:
    • mineral products with synthetic products,
    • rectified oils with unrectified ones,
    • rectified oils mutually, if they contain different additives with the same function
    • oils from different sources of raw materials,
  • before mixing electroinsulation oils of different origin, laboratory tests must be carried out in scope of:
    • dielectric properties,
    • water contents,
    • flow temperature,
    • corrosive properties,
    • resistance to oxidising,
  • before mixing turbine and lubricating oils, they must be inspected for:
    • viscosity,
    • acidic value,
    • flash point,
    • content of water,
    • corrosive properties,
    • resistance to oxidising (induction period),
    • ageing value,
    • resistance to emulsification,
    • ability to release air,
    • susceptibility to foaming.

Operational supervision (periods of time, exchange criteria) should be maintained in line with statutory regulations included in equipment's operating instructions.
